  • Free Tours By Foot run various tours in the city and you pay the guides what you want at the end. From gangster tours to ghost tours, they have a pretty packed schedule so take a look at their website.
  • Blues Brothers fan? You can still see a lot of the spots where the film was shot. Create your own free walking tour using the Chicago Like A Local blog.
  • Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the few remaining free zoos in America and one of the best. It’s free every day and they have lions, tigers, rhinos, penguins, giraffes and more.

  • Visit Wrigley Field – home to the Chicago Cubs. You have to pay to tour the stadium, but you can still soak up the atmosphere by seeing it from the outside.
  • Go to the beach! Yes, we were confused when we heard that Chicago had a beach too. Chicago is on Lake Michigan, which is wider than the English Channel at some of it’s thinnest points. Along the stretch by Lincoln Park, there’s a beach of golden sand that you just have to visit.

  • No good beach would be complete without a pier and Chicago is no different. Navy Pier is not quite the penny slot machine and candy floss covered pier of your childhood but you can still get beautiful views of the lake from it.
  • Walk the Lakefront Trail – or cycle, skate or skateboard it!

  • Visit the spot where bank robber John Dillinger was shot. 15,000 fans came to visit the spot straight after his death and people have been visiting every year since.
  • There are free music, theatre, comedy and spoken word events almost every day of the week if you know how to Google hard enough. We stumbled across a DJ running a free lunchtime concert right by the side of some sky scrapers – quite the sight!
